We’ve all said or heard this phrase often in relation to parenthood and seasons of life. This also rings true for me as we look back at another year at the Northern State University Foundation and look forward to a year of true momentous growth. The mission of the NSUF is to support the mission, vision and values of Northern State University. Collaborating with Northern State University faculty and staff, alumni, community leaders and NSU supporters, we undertook a strategic planning process that culminated in a plan providing clear goals and strategies for the NSUF to actuate this mission. The NSU Foundation has made great strides in nurturing relationships in the past year including adding an Alumni Director, cultivating relationships with the NSU President, deans and faculty, and continuing to work with the local community to foster growth and innovation. At the NSUF, healthy relationships and partnerships remain key as campus improvements and crucial academic programs lie on the horizon. I’m excited for the year ahead! I’ve said before, if you are reading this, you are a supporter of NSU. For that I am truly grateful. NSU FOUNDATION TEAM 5 KAYLEY JOHNSON has been named the Northern State University Foundation Director of Alumni Services. Johnson joined the team in March of 2023, and is responsible for planning and implementing programs and projects that engage alumni, the university and current students. As a student at NSU, I quickly realized I had found a place for me,” Johnson said. “Being a Wolf is more than just getting a degree. It’s building a community of individuals who are supportive and are always there to give you everything you need to be successful. Now, as an alum, and new Director of Alumni Services, it’s important for me to help Alumni realize the influence they have on the university and its community. It’s important to stay connected and engaged with the University you came to love as a student. We, as alum, have the opportunity to support, guide, and influence today’s students to be successful in their adventures through various ways! I look forward to meeting you as you continue to stay connected and engaged with NSU, other alumni and friends! Johnson holds a B.S. in Education from NSU and was previously the Director of the YMCA Youth Development Center. While financial aid opportunities are prevalent for NSU students, on rare occasions there is still more need than funds available. Thus the creation of the Michael and Barbara Evans Gap Scholarship. Michael ‘72 and Barbara have been providing Northern students with scholarships and other financial support for decades - both formally and informally. The formal Evans Gap Scholarship started at NSU in 2021, after Michael and Barbara had privately helped students with educational costs for years. A simple conversation with NSU President Neal Schnoor started the process after Michael asked how to identify students with real financial needs, that had exhausted all other options to continue their education. Dr. Schnoor worked with the NSU Foundation to formalize the new scholarship program. The purpose of the Michael and Barbara Evans Gap Scholarship is to help students who have run out of options and are at risk of dropping out of school or are facing life challenges that impede their ability to continue taking classes. The Evans Gap Scholarship is available to students with financial hardships not covered or available through traditional scholarships or loans. Gap Scholarships have covered tuition, PRAXIS exam costs, emergency travel, childcare, housing costs and many other hardships that cause students to struggle. These scholarships have minimal criteria and are often recommended by advisors or counselors that know which students need extra help. They are awarded on a need basis throughout the academic year and have helped numerous students continue their education. The Evans Gap Scholarships are making an IMPACT on the lives of students. Johnson Scholarship Endowment Lloyd F. and Mary Johnson Endowment WILLIAM GRASSE LEAVES LEGACY AT NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY WITH GIFTS HONORING LATE MOTHER William “Bill” Grasse, may have never attended Northern State University, and spent much of his adult life away from Aberdeen, S.D.; however, he still chose to honor his roots. Prior to his passing in California in March 2022, Grasse worked with the Northern State University Foundation to create a legacy gift—a gift created within one’s estate plan—to create two endowments at NSU. According to Emily Haldeman, a lifelong friend of Grasse, he made his legacy gifts to Northern for several reasons. “First, he wanted to honor his late mother, Gladys Grasse (Kittelson),” Haldeman said. “From all the stories I have heard, she was an amazingly strong woman who managed to raise three boys on her own. I also believe that even though Bill left Aberdeen, he never lost his connection to Aberdeen. Bill was an avid reader, and I believe, he also made his gift to NSU to support other deserving students studying English and writing,” she said. Grasse’s gift will support two critical areas of need for Northern. The Gladys B. Grasse Endowment supports the WolfPACT Scholarship, the only scholarship program of its kind in the region, and the Gladys B. Grasse Professorship Endowment creates the first-ever endowed faculty position on campus. “Bill was an amazing person,” Halderman said. “He started with virtually nothing, and he worked determinedly and relentlessly to fulfill his vision and to become a great success. He was well-read, worldly, and he lived his life with grace and humility. Having to work so hard when he was young, Bill never wasted money. I know NSU will put his gift to good use and use it in a way that honors his incredibly well-lived life. 10

Scherf Memorial Scholarship Endowment Elmer and Clara Schlagel Endowment Raymond and Celia Schlekewy Memorial Athletic Scholarship Endowment NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY ENDOWMENTS GARY AND KAY SANDQUIST SUPPORT NORTHERN STATE WITH PERPETUAL GIFTS FOR GARY ‘66 AND KAY SANDQUIST, their connection to Northern State University began long before they were born, and they’ve made sure their connection continues for generations to come through their endowment gifts. Kay attended classes at Northern, Gary is a secondgeneration Northern State alum, graduating in 1966 and his mother Avis, graduated in 1928. Gary fondly remembers his time at NSU. “It was really a different experience for me,” he said. “Meeting your roommate for the first time (I got a really good one) and doing all the things you have to do as a freshman; I enjoyed going to ball games and playing intramural basketball games. You get to meet so many students that way.” Because of his experience at Northern State University, Gary decided to pay it forward in the form of endowed scholarships. “Giving good students some help and a chance at education is something I enjoy,” he said. Gary and Kay have created multiple scholarship endowments over the years including a scholarship for an agriculture minor as well as a scholarship in honor of their loved ones who have passed away from cancer. Gary and Kay said, “We want to see Northern continue to thrive. That means students continue to enroll and experience the college life. Northern has a reputation for producing great teachers and coaches and students in other fields both locally and nationally.” Because of the Sandquists’ generous support, students will be able to continue their education across multiple disciplines at Northern State.
