The office of Sponsored Projects is here to help with anything grants related. Recently, the Research Affairs Council with the system sought ways to standardize processes with schools in the SD BOR. One of these ways was to collectively invest in one pre- and post-award system, called Cayuse. This newsletter outlines the pre-award process for faculty and staff. SPONSORED PROJECTS ANNUAL NEWSLETTER AY24-25 If you are interested in applying for a grant, please contact Sponsored Projects office (see contact below) for pre-award and post-award guidance. Contact Alyssa Kiesow, if needed. Q: What is Cayuse? A: Cayuse is a cloud-based software that helps manage grant applications and awards. It can help facilitate proposal development, track submissions, build awards, manage budgets, and ensure compliance with funding agency requirements. Northern State University and Black Hills State University are using a collaborative platform to curtail high costs to the individual institutions. Q: Can I build my proposal in Cayuse? A: No. Cayuse is the platform in which you obtain pre-approval for your grant, the post-review after receiving the grant. I will help manage the life of the grant from start to finish. You will still need to follow the guidance provided by the granting agency as you build and submit your proposal. Cayuse will help us manage the grant before submission and after the award. Details on eligibility and grant guidelines are available in the respective Request for Proposal (RFP). Q: Can I track my proposal in Cayuse? A: Yes. You can follow the approval, submission, award, and report process in Cayuse. Q: Do I still need to receive prior approval prior to grant submission? If so, how do I submit a proposal for internal review? A: Yes. You will need to route this through Cayuse instead of with the fillable DocuSign. Q: Do I use Cayuse for interim and final reports? A: Yes. Once your grant is entered into Cayuse, budgets and reports are maintained//managed in this system. It connects to Banner. However, you must still submit your report to the granting agency with the assistance of the Director of Sponsored Projects. Q: At the conclusion of my grant, can I still see past activity in Cayuse? A: No. You as a researcher may not have privileges to do so, but the Director of Sponsored Projects can do so. Q: Will there be training for the use of Cayuse? A: There will not be any formal training, at this time. However, we hope to continue to build cheat sheets to send to faculty and staff, then follow-up with training through CETL whether during in-service or another time during the fall semester.

Such data is available to the public in the SDBOR Factbook. Herein, I report the last five years of grants. Research at the Federal Level Recently, there was discussion as to changing the indirect rates to 15% for all federal grants; however, researchers noted that this may impact research and scholarship at institutions of higher learning. Recently, it was determined through legal means that states may use their current indirect rates on salaries for federal grants. Federal funding has not been paused overall. Although certain agencies may impose temporary holds for specific reasons, there is no broad pause at the federal level.
