Alumni in Action: Kelsey Stock Kelsey Stock graduated In Honoribus from Northern State University in spring 2015 with a political science and history major. While attending NSU, she was involved with the honors program, student government, orientation, NSU Lion’s Club and marching band! After graduating from Northern State University, she continued her education at the UND School of Law where she graduated in spring 2020. She recently completed the South Dakota bar exam and is now currently working as an attorney in Ortonville, Minn. Stock explains there were different ways that the honors program at NSU impacted her future education and career. The opportunity to complete research and take discussion-based classes prepared her for the classes she would be attending while in law school. She also gained confidence through the honors program to achieve her goal of attending law school. She really enjoyed the opportunity to meet other honors students and build relationships with her professors. These relationships created a bond that eventually developed into her honors professors becoming mentors and professional references. She also explains the lifelong friendships she created through the program and that she even met her husband in her freshman honors seminar! Stock’s favorite memory from the honors program was attending honors retreats and conferences. These opportunities led to fun experiences, new friendships, and the chance to be surrounded by other driven individuals. The advice she would love to provide for current and future honors students is “to take classes based on the professor's quality, take difficult classes, and do things outside of your comfort zone. College is a time to sharpen your skills and practice skills that you're uncomfortable with. It's much safer to ‘fail’ in college than in the real world, so do something that scares you, and don't be afraid to be bad at something in college.” Give Now Follow the link https://apps.northern.edu /givingapp/givenow.aspx Select “Other” under the Designation tab and specify “Honors Program” to support Honors Housing Scholarships, NSU Common Read, and Honors Student Travel.
