Both tasks are daunting, but the former certainly provides much needed monetary support. Northern State University’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is using these funds to build a Pedagogy Lab to train educators throughout the Aberdeen area on best practices for teaching effective and engaging courses in a variety of modalities. The lab will be outfitted with the technologies necessary to train teachers in face-to-face, online, and HyFlex pedagogies. Ms. Lara Nelson, Director of American Indian Circle Program 3M, $10,000. Funds from this grant will provide financial support to American Indian students to be successful in Northern State University’s STEM programs. Two $5,000 scholarships will be offered to two notable and worthy American Indian students from South Dakota. Dr. Susan Citrak, Assistant Professor of Chemistry SDBOR Research and Development, $42,500. These funds will support the purchase of a Benchtop Powder X-Ray Diffractometer (PXRD) to advance the materials characterization capabilities of the Science Department. PXRD is a foundational instrument for characterizing materials including mineral content in soils, synthesized inorganic materials, and crystallized proteins. Dr. Amy Dolan, Assistant Professor of Biology; Dr. Susan Citrak, Assistant Professor of Chemistry 3M, $5,000. Funds from this grant will help NSU continue STEM outreach via monthly, hands-on activities to area elementary schools and provide teachers training, tools, and resources to bring STEM into their own classrooms. In both instances, 3-5th grade classrooms are targeted to ensure a “captured” audience; funds support materials and supplies necessary to build STEM literacy in the region. Dr. Jon Mitchell, Associate Professor of Biochemistry SD Dept of Health, $19,417. Funds will support continual surveillance of West Nile virus in mosquito populations in northeastern South Dakota. Dr. Christopher Stanichar, Assistant Professor of Music SD Arts Council, $5,000. Funds will support three major orchestral concerts performed by the Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony engaging the community in numerous ways. Mr. Sean Blackburn, Dean of Students SD Dept of Health, $45,000. Funds will support continual screening/testing/immunization of COVID-19 virus in northeastern South Dakota.

Funds are requested to allow the digitization and arrangement of items in the NSU Archives & Special Collections, along with the SD Germans from Russia Center’s collections. In addition, funds will support speaker activities through the new Center for Public History and Civic Engagement. Dr. Cheryl Wold, Associate Dean, School of Education; Ms. Jessica Vogel, Instructor of Education; Ms. Lara Nelson, Director of American Indian Circle Program SD Community Foundation Community Innovation, $19,871. Funds are requested to build partnerships between Northern State University, South Dakota Native American Communities, and the Aberdeen Public School District to serve Native American students and their school districts. This program intends to address three critical issues in South Dakota: 1) the low rates of Native American students graduating from high school, 2) the low numbers of those attending higher education in South Dakota, and 3) the physical and mental health of Native American students. Dr. Debbi Bumpous, VP of Technology, Chief Information Officer; Dr. Alyssa Kiesow, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences; Ms. Jodi Casanova, Deputy Chief Information Officer; Mr. Jeremy Iverson, Technology Integration Specialist NSF Campus Cyberinfrastructure, $998,750. (Note: NSU’s sub-award amount is $552,450.) Funds are requested by the South Dakota Board of Regents (SDBOR), the University of South Dakota (USD), South Dakota State University (SDSU), Northern State University (NSU), and Dakota State University (DSU) proposing to deploy and maintain the South Dakota Research and Education Data Interchange (SD-REDI). This project will provide access to a secure cyberinfrastructure (CI) for all institutions governed by the SDBOR, supporting research innovation and advance education across their STEM portfolios. Dr. Nuurrianti Jalli, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies Facebook Research, $75,400. Funds are requested to understand the current dynamic within the WhatsApp ecosystem in Indonesia and would provide important data to Facebook on the role of WhatsApp in opinion formation in Indonesia by specifically looking at participatory propaganda and misinformation.
