NORTHERN TODAY 17 FALL 2018 DALE MCELHANY Bachelor of Science in education, 1962 He was a football and wrestling student-athlete for the Wolves from 1959 to 1962. McElhany taught high school math and coached football, wrestling, and track and field in South Dakota and Wyoming over the course of his career. He is the president of the Watertown Education Association and was inducted into the S.D. Hickory Stick organization as an outstanding educator. McElhany is a member of the S.D. Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame, winning the state championship in 1968. He founded and directed SDAAU wrestling from 1968 to 1972, nurturing the program to more than 7,200 participants. As the head football coach at Watertown, McElhany won five ESD Championships and was twice named the South Dakota Football Coach of the Year and South Dakota Sportswriters Coach of the Year. He also added three conference championships and one state championship as an assistant coach in both wrestling and football. He resides in Watertown with his wife, Donna, who is a 1960 graduate of NSC, and has three children and nine grandchildren. KRETCHMAN 1957 Leon P. Lassanke of Aberdeen celebrated his 80th birthday on Sept. 30, 2018. 1962 Sharon (Christman) Freden and her husband, Noble, recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. They reside in Walnut Creek, Calif., having relocated from Denver, Colo., to be closer to their daughter Anne, a partner with Ernst & Young, her husband, and their three children. 1967; 1968, Gary Aadland ‘67 and Betty (Rapp) Aadland ‘68 celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 22, 2018. 1970 Joan (Stewart) Kjellsen of Sisseton, S.D., celebrated her 80th birthday on June 12, 2018. 1972 , Roger and Kay Vikander of Aberdeen, S.D., celebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary on June 15, 2018. 1980 Anita and Daryl Jung of Warner, S.D., were honored for their 40th wedding anniversary on June 23, 2018. 2008 Erin Nikolas married Jason Kumpf. 2012 Erica (Guthmiller) Paxton and Cody Paxton welcomed a baby boy, Mason David Paxton, on June 11, 2018. Keith Mayer and Shelby Fust were married on June 30, 2018, in Aberdeen, S.D. 2013 Jared Embury married Nicole Foote. 2016; 2017 Taylor Z emlicka (2016) and Ashley Clapp (2017) got engaged at the 2018 Gypsy Day Football Game during halftime. 2017; 2014 Sean Kramer (2017) married Kayla Thoreson (2014). CELEBRATIONS CLASS NOTES 1966 Johannas (Asmussen) Jordan was recently named chaplain for Daughters of the King Chapter at All Saints on Central Phoenix, Ariz. 1974 Dan Pansch of Sioux Falls, S.D., recently won the 65 A Division of the U.S. Open Racquetball Tournament held in Minneapolis, Minn. 1979 Jane Palmquist, Valley Cottage, N.Y., was inducted into the Aberdeen Central High School 2018 Hall of Fame in Fine Arts. Dr. Palmquist is currently Associate Professor of Music at the Conservatory of Music of Brooklyn College, City University of New York, where she teaches courses in string music education and music appreciation. 1980 Dixie (Mohr) Janker retired in 2018 after 30 years of teaching elementary education in the Department of Defense Schools in Germany and Belgium and for the Fairfax County Schools in Northern Virginia. 1981 Larry Buffington, Gayville, S.D., was recently named the SDCCTFCA Area 3 Class B Coach of the Year. 1986 Dale A. Norton was awarded the title Nevada Superintendent of the Year for the 2017-18 school year. As part of receiving this honor, Norton will represent the state of Nevada at the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) to compete for the national title for Superintendent of the Year in February 2019. 1988 Sandra Hoglund Hanson, Sioux Falls, S.D., has been appointed a judge in the Second Judicial Circuit Court. Sandra was born in Langford, S.D., and is a partner at Davenport Evans, having practiced with the firm since 1993. 1997 Stephanie Rieck has been promoted to Regional Supervisor for the Western Region of QS/1 Data Systems. 1999 Dr. Erik Ronmark, Birmingham, Mich., is the general manager and vice president of Detroit Symphony Orchestra. 2001 Tim Hedblom, Huron, S.D., is working as a fifth-grade teacher with the Huron School District. 2001 Onna (Webster) LeBeau, Rapid City, S.D.: Black Hills Community Loan Fund Inc., the organization run by Onna, was recently featured in Next City Magazine, a magazine inspiring better cities.
