NORTHERN TODAY 5 FALL 2018 NORTHERN NEWS THE ATHLETIC AND RECREATION FIELDS is one of three projects of the Educational Impact Campaign, a collaborative effort between Northern and the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. The other two projects of the Educational Impact Campaign are a new SDSBVI and an on-campus regional sports complex. Northern broke ground on the Athletic and Recreation Fields project in April. The project includes a new competition field for the NSU soccer team and new practice field for the NSU football team, with a pavilion between the two. The fields opened for the fall 2018 athletic season. Ribbon-cutting ceremony held for Northern State University Athletic and Recreation Fields A ribbon-cutting ceremony for Northern State’s new Athletic and Recreation Fields was held Wednesday, Oct. 24. Northern officials and members of the public gathered at the new fields, located east of the former Jerde Hall site. ‘The Hate U Give’ author delivers 2018 NSU Common Read Lecture The author of a book that has spent numerous weeks on the New York Times bestseller list delivered Northern State University’s 2018 Common Read Lecture. ANGIE THOMAS, author of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling book “The Hate U Give,” spoke at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The event—Northern’s eighth annual Common Read Lecture— was free and open to the public. Thomas was born, raised and still resides in Jackson, Miss. A former teen rapper, she holds a BFA in Creative Writing from Belhaven University. The award-winning “The Hate U Give,” her debut novel, has received starred reviews from eight literary journals and has been optioned by Fox 2000 and Temple Hill Production. The book follows Starr Carter, an ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances, addressing issues of racism and police violence with intelligence, heart and unflinching honesty.
