THREE Northern State University alumni and one former faculty member will be inducted into the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame this fall. The inductees are: Janel Birrenkott, a 1987 Northern graduate, was a basketball star for the Wolves as well as nationally with USA Deaf Team. Bryan Brewer, who graduated from Northern in 1970, was a longtime Pine Ridge coach and administrator who helped create Lakota Nation Invitational events. Dr. Kathie Courtney, former faculty member in the NSU School of Education, was a pioneer in the field of athletic training and recognized nationally for her leadership. Gary Evjen, a 1972 Northern graduate, ended his time with the Wolves basketball team as the first college player to finish his career with more than 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. These individuals will be among those honored at the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony, which will be held Sunday, Sept. 25, in Sioux Falls.
