NORTHERN TODAY 28 SPECIAL I SSUE | Summer 2021 REVITAL IZATION OF CAMPUS | A SALUTE TO OUR DONORS Friendship led to lasting support of Northern State University George Rahm was drawn to Northern State University because of a good friend who was a Northern alum. RAHM and the late Don Dix, a former King of the Gyps, attended Wolves football and basketball games together for many years – at basketball games, they sat in the same seats since the Barnett Center first opened. “I became part of Northern that way,” said Rahm, who farms and ranches near Doland. Today, Rahm’s connection to Northern continues through his generous support of the university. “I just like supporting Northern,” he explained. “It’s a good cause. I like the graduation percentage they have with their athletes, too.” Rahm also administers scholarships on behalf of his parents through the Sioux Falls Community Foundation. Without children of his own, Rahm said he decided this was his way to give back. “What better way to show support? Kids are the future,” he said. “The next generation will be the ones who will be making decisions, paying taxes and taking care of us.” At Northern, Rahm said he thinks the improvements made to campus in recent years are great. “I think it solidifies Northern being here,” he said. Those new building projects include the Jewett Regional Science Education Center; three new residence halls; a new School for the Blind and Visually Impaired; Athletic and Recreation Fields and Pavilion; and the Regional Sports Complex, which includes Dacotah Bank Stadium and Koehler Hall of Fame Softball Field. Rahm pointed out that the Regional Sports Complex will not only benefit Northern. The hope is to have high school games and other community events held there as well. Aberdeen has been a very supportive community, he said. “Aberdeen’s been great for not only Northern athletics but local athletics in general,” Rahm said. “It’s a great community to be a part of.” “What better way to show support? Kids are the future.” GEORGE RAHM
