NORTHERN TODAY 32 SPECIAL I SSUE | Summer 2021 REVITAL IZATION OF CAMPUS | A SALUTE TO OUR DONORS “AS EVIDENCED by my time on the Board of Regents and other activities in my lifetime, I feel that an opportunity for advancement, fulfillment and success in life is dependent upon education,” Baloun said. “Education is the one tool that provides everybody with an equal opportunity, if they’re able to gather their degree.” Northern is also important to the community and region. “To me, we know that the vast majority of our students have a tendency to attain their education within a proximity of 250-300 miles of where they live, so the idea of regional universities is extremely important,” Baloun said. Baloun earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northern. His wife, Sheryl (Krage) Baloun, is also a Northern alum. “I compliment Northern and the leadership in the last 10 years in how they have worked on their campus, their programs and their scholarships to enable students to gather their education and to be successful in their work life,” he said. “Education is the one tool that provides everybody with an equal opportunity, if they’re able to gather their degree.” TERRY BALOUN Baloun: Education is an important tool Former South Dakota Board of Regents member Terry Baloun supports Northern State and the Educational Impact Campaign because he believes in the importance of education. “The transformation of Northern over the last five years is remarkable. Word is spreading around the region about how incredible Northern’s campus is and how studentfocused our facilities are. We’ve always had a studentfocused faculty and staff, each working every day to do right by students, and now we have the facilities that reflect who we are and our approach to higher education at Northern. All of the improvements are also a reflection of the supportive community in Aberdeen and on campus. As a new student walking onto campus the first time, you can see with your own eyes how much everybody in the Aberdeen area believes in Northern and believes in your potential. Northern students created so many memories in the Barnett Center and Jerde Hall, and now our students are creating memories in Great Plains East and West — and this fall, great memories and new traditions will form in Dacotah Bank Stadium and Koehler Hall of Fame Softball Field.” Dr. Erin H. Fouberg Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs
