46 He smiled that perfect and kind smile once again. Mary felt like she would swoon like a complete idiot and ruin ev- erything. But his jawline could have cut diamonds and that was giving her issues. She leaned awkwardly against a nearby building. It was cold and she almost fell over from the shock of it. But she quickly recomposed herself. In the chaotic moment of trying to cover for her almost second fall of the day, she blurted out: “Well, I’d love to help you then. I’ve never done anything of importance before.” Her eyes widened again as she realized what had just come out of her mouth. There was no going back now. “Fantastic, sweetheart. I knew I could count on you.” He winked and her heart leapt. She tried to stop the grin forming on her face, but she couldn’t help it. “And, of course, to repay you I’d love to grab some coffee or lunch sometime,” he added. All she could do was nod eagerly. All of this was far too much to take in. She seriously had to be dreaming. As he wrote down the address on a slip of paper, she studied every inch of his face. It was seriously astonishing. From his head with every hair in place to his smiling blue eyes to his jawline which, again, was sharp and defined and perfection. He handed her the paper and told her to let him know how it went the next day. He gave her a peck on the cheek and before she knew it, he was lost in the crowd. Mary practically skipped the entire way to the man’s house, planning their future together. Her life finally had a happy ending and she could see it. Those golden flecks in her eyes shone brighter than they ever had before. That daydream had become a reality. When she arrived at the house, policemen were everywhere. This can’t be right , she thought. “There it is!” they were all shouting. “She has it in her hand!” Before she knew it, they were ripping the case from her hand and dumping out piles of cocaine from it. She couldn’t speak. She could only think, Stupid, romantic fool!
