33 On the gray sidewalk She skips and plays Not knowing a man Has been watching for days She throws her head back Letting out giggles And with her colorful chalks She forms drawings with squiggles He walks out his door Offering her a surprise She thinks not of the dangers Or even demise Instead she skips ‘cross the street With wonder pushing her feet He slips her into his house Quieter than a mouse After showing her each floor He stops at a small hidden door “Please open it.” He asks the girl She gives the knob a tiny twirl Beneath the house, a small room for her With all the toys there ever were Eagerly she went in to play She didn’t know that’s where she’d stay The tiny door Closed far too quick And locked her in With one small “click” A few years or so passed slowly by Her parents had no more room to cry They’d searched and searched both day and night But never of her did catch a sight The man only wanted that she listen to him But his anger quickly reached its brim The girl had grown thin and worn And now her favorite dress was torn One night she thought Herself with child She told the man The man went wild Two innocent lives that night were lost A bruised body lay beneath the frost The wicked man was never found But one day soon, he’ll rest in the ground Innocence Kayla Sproles
