40 “I know, Mom. I love you too. But…” Olivia tried to explain her thoughts but the door to the dressing room cut her off. Though Olivia and Viola were married that day, her mother never walked her down the aisle and she hadn’t spoken to her since. A loud knock startled Olivia. She grabbed her phone from her chest and pulled herself up to answer the door. Before flipping the deadbolt, she wiped her face with the sleeve of her dark green sweatshirt to try and pretend like she hadn’t just been crying. Olivia was stunned. “How are you doing, honey?” Olivia sank to the floor, a new set of sobs taking over her body. Great. My mom is here to try and tell me all the mistakes I made in marrying Viola. “Oh, sweetie,” her mother cooed as she wrapped her arms around her daughter. “I’ve been worried sick. I started calling you right after Viola’s parents told me about the car accident. Why didn’t you call me?” Her mother was rubbing her back and rocking her back and forth. “I couldn’t…call…you,” she managed to relay between sobs. She took a moment to steady her breathing. “Not after what happened at the wedding…” Her mother looked her in the eyes. “Oh, Olivia… Oh, sweetie… I have regretted that day ever since it happened. I should’ve been there to walk my baby down the aisle…” The sobs began again as Olivia sank back into her mother’s arms. I can’t believe she is really gone. “Shhh…I’m here. I’ll take care of you. Let it out, honey.”
