67 Addiction Myles Beckler Everyone has one, everyone needs one. Everyone has an addiction. They look down their noses at all the junkies... These drug addicts with their pot and their weed. Thank god I’m not addicted like them, they say. As they go on watching TV addicted to their shows and their Netflix, Drinking sodas, addicted to their Coke and their Pepsi. And their McDonald’s and their Burger King and their Kentucky Fried Chicken. And their own drugs, with the adderall and the ritalin and other pills with big-sounding names. Everyone has one; everyone has an addiction. People are addicted to their exercise, jogging, running, biking, sweating, passing out in the street. People are addicted to their diet trends, fat free, sugar free, gluten free, flavor free, and all-organic. People are addicted to their jobs, they need money, they need raises, they need promotions. People are addicted to their things, their houses, their cars, their flat-screen TVs. People are addicted to their religion, praying for a fix, high on the blood of Christ almighty. People are addicted to sports, not playing sports but watching other people play them. Addicted to their politics, my party is the best because I’m in it. Addicted to their families, get a wife, and kids, and a home, and a mini van. You can collect the full set. Addicted to the media, I heard it on the Internet, so it must be true. Addicted to their phones, looking at blank screens with blank faces. To their social networks, checking their Twitter every five minutes. To their lives, and medication, and health insurance, and Medicare. To their security and their locks, and their alarms, and those warning labels on their kids’ toys. Their guns, gotta have protection, everyone has guns. Their blockbuster movies, big fights and big explosions. Hobbies, everyone has a hobby— why don’t you? Cars, and gas and insurance and repairs and registration. Houses, and yards, and lawns, and white picket fences. But thank god I’m not addicted to anything. I’m such a well-adjusted individual. Not like those Junkies with their pot and their crack. Not like those booze hounds with their beer and their whiskey. Not like those sex addicts with their porn and their fetishes. Thank goodness I’m not addicted. Thank god I’m not dependent. Everyone has something, everyone has a dependency. Everyone is addicted.
