26 for the community. I have done everything asked of me and will continue to do so. So please, take some time to really think about what you are saying and doing, before kicking me out of the place I have come to call home,” I said and then sat in the chair that I was placed in. “We will take into consideration what was just given to us. You are dismissed for now, but don’t go running out of the building. You are given a room here until we have reached an understanding,” the first man said before waving me off with a flick of his wrist. I left the room where all of the council was seated, going back out into the cold and moist hallway where the walls were a murky grey littered with green moss, just the same as the room I was just in. Two guards were waiting for me. They flanked me on each side and walked me down the dim hallway lit by torches. The guards led me to an unmarked room and opened the door, waiting for me to go in until they closed the door again, all but locking me inside. The room was lighter than the hallway. More torches surrounded the walls and old paintings hung from the places not occupied by torches. The room was well furnished and had a sense of being lived in, if only a small sense. I would be able to stay here for a few days, if needed. It’s not like I had anywhere to go, or anyone to see. Nobody would miss me if I stayed here for a few days, not even the cat. She might get angry about the lack of food, but that’s about it. Going to the bed I sat down and started to reflect on what had happened these past few months, going all the way back to when I first started using my powers. ******** I was walking back to my apartment, thinking about what had just happened at the bookstore a few moments ago. I was minding my own business, buying a couple of new spell books for my wiccan meeting that night when a crotchety old woman came up to me and started yelling at me to get out. “We don’t need people like you here! Get out before you curse us all!” the woman screamed at me waving around her arms in the small space between shelves. Ugh! So I responded in kind first, “It’s not like I’m causing a scene or doing anything wrong. So just leave me alone.” And I walked away. The woman followed me up to the counter and started yelling once again. “You could curse us all with a pinky! You need to leave and never return,” she said while raising her voice more. Okay, so now I was done playing nice. “Listen, you cranky ass old lady, I am doing nothing wrong! I’m just trying to buy a book and go home. So leave me alone before I get mad and do curse you,” I said throwing money at the young boy behind the counter and leaving with my book. I should have gotten my magic gauntlet out of my purse and knocked some sense into the old hag. That would have been fun. Watching her fall to the ground would have been the highlight of my damn day. But I didn’t, and I went home with my book to read until the meeting. Besides, I kind of had to stay on the better side of society since what happened last month. I mean, I really didn’t mean to lock the poor girl in the latrine. . . . But she was making fun of my hair and my magic just kind of . . . went out of control. “It’s not my fault that I’m undertrained. The council should really get me a better teacher,” I explained to the high court, but they put me on probation. ******** So yeah. I can kind of see why they are being cautious with me now. But like I said to them then, “I haven’t done anything wrong or bad in months. I have been extra careful and not even used my magic outside of my apartment in weeks.” They just don’t like me. That’s it. I’ll get out of this hell hole soon.
