27 Photograph in a Cell By Nathan Berg You are in a prison overseas where the wet, crumbling walls are pasted with photographs of a man with dead eyes. You will grow to love your cell as you would love a father, with the ferocity and terrible beauty of a Kodiak. But the man in the photograph will simply be a ghost haunting your sleep with twisting fingers and tattooed tears. Ode to Such a Mammal By Sarah Schafer Look there—over the landscape, grassy and dry, A woman, so tall, stands hovering nearby. This creature deserves a powerful name, One that portrays her strength and eloquence. One that can say she’s gentle but not tame. To assign letters for such a mammal is not an easy task. However, the word that fits seems to be giraffe. Nothing special—is what they think they see, A creature too tall to be admired meticulously. They look like imbeciles of the African land As they resemble uncoordination to drink water. As they tower over everything when they stand. To think highly of such a mammal is illogical and rash. However, few are animals as striking as a giraffe. Oh, giraffes so graceful, mighty, and strong, Be present in the Savannah—act like you belong. Be tough, be bold, Be rough, and behold: You are an animal of the wilderness. Take charge. Rule over the bareness.
