15 If I close my eyes I can almost hear almost hear the wind breaking through the door seals The hard smack of raindrops on the windshield only adds to my calm headspace My music turned down to seven, seeping out of the speakers my mind at peace Heated air passes over my hands and face, warming the rest of me if only temporarily Faint voices pass by my ears and I wonder "Am I crazy?" "Surely not," I answer myself The purr of my engine is soon drowned out by insignificant conversation The smell of raspberry pine tree is not enough to pull me out of my trance I slip "You are not enough!" “. . .” “. . .” "Yes, you are!" "What about the time..." “. . .” “. . .” "He was young" "Not young enough" “. . .” "Quiet!" I yell to myself. Silence The running engine slowly fades back into existence As I turn the dial, my music pours out in a flood a preemptive strike against my own thoughts WindshieldWipe It Away Ethan Kurtz
