NORTHERN TODAY 12 FALL 2020 News | NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY TWO OF NORTHERN ’ S recent building projects have been named AIA South Dakota Design Award winners. The Harvey C. Jewett IV Regional Science Education Center won the 2020 AIA South Dakota People’s Choice Award, and the NSU Athletic and Recreation Fields Pavilion won a 2019 AIA Merit Award. CO-OP Architecture designed the Athletic and Recreation Fields Pavilion. The Jewett Regional Science Education Center was designed by architectural and engineering firm TSP Inc. Jewett Regional Science Education Center “The mesh scrim detail along State Street, the unique brick ‘fin’ articulation along the building, the vibrant use of color and materiality on the interior, and the ‘extroversion’ of the cantilevered collaboration spaces that hang off the east side were all successful design moments noted by our colleagues and the public,” said TSP architect Chase Kramer, commenting on the Science Center’s People’s Choice Award. “Since this was an award chosen by the public, I think the voters recognized the new sense of entry and welcome it provides to campus, and what a great asset the programs inside the building are to the region and community as well,” he said. Kramer’s favorite aspect of the building is the faculty lounge patio and the integration of the south-side colonnade. “The outdoor patio is a great asset to attract new faculty even though such a structure in Aberdeen may not be useful year round,” he explained. “The colonnade along the south side of the west wing is what many students are likely to experience as they come across the parking lot from JFAC or even as they approach the building from the campus’ south side. It is a contemporary take on a traditional arcade element reminiscent of old-world gothic- type English universities.” The firm also designed the original Barnett Center, said architect Michelle Klobassa of TSP, as well as the new South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, which is directly across the street. She said it’s unique to have those three buildings all right next to each other. “The first time I visited the Northern campus, I loved the Two new NSU buildings are recipients of South Dakota Design Awards Along with unprecedented support and fundraising, Northern State University’s building projects have earned another accolade: award-winning design.
