- 37 - NSU Office of Residence Life Trash All students are responsible for removing their trash from the building to the dumpster. Residents are not allowed to take room trash to the public bathrooms or lobbies for disposal. Vandalism Vandalism to University facilities or property will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Persons who violate this policy will be subject to disciplinary action and may be referred to the Aberdeen Police. Visitation Visitation hours in residence halls at NSU are 24/7 for all residents and guests. Cohabitation and overnight guest policies reflect student privileges, rather than student rights, and will be evaluated on an on-going basis by student leaders and staff to ensure that the well-being of the greater residence hall community is served. Individual students shall have the option of making a written request to the Director of Residence Life to move to a more restrictive living situation. Such a move will be permitted only on a spaceavailable basis. Residents are required to escort their guests at all times. Weapons Possession and use of weapons in campus housing are regulated under SDBOR policies 1.4.5, 3.4.1, and 3.7.1. Individuals are prohibited from possessing or carrying firearms, BB guns, switchblades, fixed blade knives exceeding five inches, fireworks, explosives, dangerous chemicals, or any device intended to injure or harm others in campus housing unless specifically permitted by law and policy. • Concealed Pistols: Individuals who wish to possess or carry must have an enhanced concealed permit under South Dakota law. • Individuals may possess stun guns, mace, or pepper spray for personal safety. • Residential Storage: Firearms, stun guns, and self-defense sprays must be stored in a locked case or safe when not carried. These items may also be secured in a locked personal vehicle. Residence Life does not provide storage cases or safes. • Responsibility: Individuals are solely responsible for ensuring proper storage and compliance. Violations may result in disciplinary action, including removal from housing or expulsion. • Reporting: Individuals aware of unsecured or unauthorized weapons should immediately notify Residence Life, 911, Campus Safety at 605-380-8925, or 911. Window and Door Decorations Window/Door decorations are permitted. Residence Life recommends that good judgement is used when putting up window or door decorations. Window/Door decorations can add to the appearance of a room or the hall if they are tastefully done. The ability to decorate can lead to a feeling of pride in a room and create student satisfaction. Since windows and doors are not only a part of a student's room, but also the outside public appearance of a hall, Residence Life asks for the community members to be kept in mind when decorating a window or door.
