ACADEMIC BANNERS School of Business donated by Marty Gainok, in memory of Elmer Gainok: Luberta Harrington, in memory of Dr. Harvey Harrington; anonymous, in honor of Dr. Harry Jasinski; and Dr. Richard and Luvina Van Beek College of Arts and Sciences donated by Dr. Richard and Elsie Chuang Millicent Atkins School of Education donated by Dr. Lester and Charlotte Clarke and Dr. Robert and Jeannette Sorge School of Fine Arts donated by Dr. Jack and Alyce Berggren and Lonn and Dorothy Sweet Center for Statewide E-learning Graduate Studies The academic banners were introduced and dedicated as part of the inaugural ceremonies for Dr. John Hilpert, 14th president of Northern State University, in December 1998. The academic banners were designed by Peter Kilian, NSU professor of art, and crafted by Shirley Stephens, a free-lance textile artist from Sioux Falls, S.D. Each banner symbolically represents the academic focus and purpose associated with the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Education, the School of Fine Arts, Graduate Studies and the Center for Statewide E-learning. The colors of the banners reflect the school colors of NSU, maroon and gold, as well as the academic colors traditionally associated with each discipline. These banners are a regular part of all academic ceremonies held at Northern. r 2
