STUDENT AFFAIRS 24 ANNUAL REPORT Jerilyn K. Mielke, Senior Secretary, has worked/run Student Affairs for a little over 30 years. This spring she successfully completed an eight-hour training course on Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education. She was again nominated for an Employee Performance Award and has continued to edit and proof all Student Affairs campus-wide communications. In October 2022, Jerilyn welcomed her first grandchild, Landon Lambert. Melanie Neiber was promoted to Senior Secretary for Residence Life and Student Involvement and Leadership in July 2022. See her story under “Staff Transitions” on page 5. Marty L. Sabolo, Director of Residence Life and Dining Services, was the recipient of the Northern State Community Leader Service Award for the 2022-23 academic year. Sabolo served as Co-Chair of the Wolf Pack Welcome Committee, a member of the Northern Cares Team, a member of the Security Systems Oversight Committee, a team lead on the Dining Services Transition Team and was recently appointed to the First Year Seminar Committee. In spring 2023, Sabolo completed the Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education training course. During summer 2023, he will attend the Association of College and University Housing Officers Conference in Portland, Ore. Sabolo is serving his second twoyear term as President of the Aberdeen Housing Authority and was appointed as Chair of the Avera Hospital Patient Advisory Board. Sabolo also serves as a founding Board Member of a new nonprofit corporation, HousingPlus Inc., which assesses the needs of the low-income and homeless population and assists with funding sources to support permanent housing solutions. Angela Senger, Campus Police Officer, coordinated and presented ALICE Active Shooter Training open to faculty and staff on campus as well as simulated active shooter drills to various departments. See her full retirement highlight on page 6. Christina B. Shilman, a staff counselor in Counseling Services since July 2021, continued to see students for individual counseling and in the classroom where she presented on various topics to promote student wellness. Christina is QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) trained and presented this curriculum to faculty, staff, and students. Counseling Services sponsored Mental Health First Aid training for faculty and staff, which was provided by partners at Northeastern Mental Health Center where Christina was an active participant. Christina was presented with the 2023 Student Service Award for Support Services at this year’s Employee Performance Awards and Recognition Luncheon. Christina, along with the Director of Counseling and Health Services Becky Kuch, was interviewed on Dakota News Now, discussing Northern’s Counseling Services and its partnership with Northeastern Mental Health Center (NEMHC). Christina continues to accrue hours for her licensure and is on track to meet her goal in January 2024. Staff counselors provide personal and group therapy to students consistent with the Counseling Services Scope of Practice. Counselors also create and participate in presentations and workshops in classrooms, residence halls, and in the community. Kelly A. Weismantel, Assistant Director of Student Accessibility Services, serves on the Advisory Board for the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. She has provided several presentations in partnership with the South Dakota Transitional Services Liaison Project to high school students with disabilities to educate on Accessibility Services within higher education. Kelly has also presented to employees of the South Dakota Department of Rehabilitation Services on ACCESS Northern and student accessibility. On campus, Kelly serves as one of Student Affairs Staff representatives on the newly formed Staff Council. Kelly maintains licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor in South Dakota and volunteers with several community service organizations with a focus on veterans and conservation in her free time. Thomas Williams, Assistant Director for Multicultural Affairs, served as an instructor for PE 334 - Social & Behavioral Issues spring 2023. Williams attended ACES training (Adverse Childhood Experiences) as well as Professional Well-Being: Moving Beyond the Trauma. He also attended CPR emergency mental health intervention for suicidal persons and assisted with the South Dakota Vote with Pride Campaign. Williams attended Mental Health FIRST AID training as well as QPR (Question, Persuade and Refer). Williams coordinated activities for LGBTQ Youth, Ethics, Advocacy, & Multiculturalism. He completed Northern CARES Training, ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate) Active Shooter training. Williams participated in the Instructional Technology Services - Faculty & Staff Trainings in the spring of 2023. He completed training in student affairs assessment strategies. He will complete the SafeZone Workshop Series in summer 2023. Williams served on the SEM Retention Committee and on the Staff Council. He also served on three search committees and is the ADID (Athletics Diversity and Inclusion Designee) for Northern Athletics. He attended the 2022 South Dakota Higher Education Association Annual Fall Conference, served on the Advisory Group for Inclusion and Belonging, and was a part of the South Dakota Coalition Committee.
