STUDENT AFFAIRS 24 ANNUAL REPORT Marty L. Sabolo, director of residence life and dining services, will be entering his 10th year at Northern State University. Sabolo serves as co-chair of the Wolf Pack Welcome Committee, a member of the Northern CARES Team, a member of the Security Systems Oversight Committee, and a member of the First Year Seminar Committee. Last summer, Sabolo oversaw the $1 million renovation of the Wolves Den and Lair and upgrades to Einsteins Bros. Bagels. These projects were his fourth major new construction renovation project on the Northern campus. During the spring of 2024, Sabolo and his staff hosted the 2024 South Dakota Housing Officers Drive-In Workshop on the Northern campus. He also received the distinction of completing the 100th Key Result of the Strategic Plan with improvements to the residence hall marketing program. Sabolo is serving his second two-year term as president of the Aberdeen Housing Authority, he is currently serving his second year as chair of the St. Luke’s Hospital Patient Advisory Board. Sabolo also serves as a founding board member of a new non-profit corporation, HousingPlus, Inc. that assesses the needs of the low-income and homeless population and assists with funding sources to support permanent housing solutions. Eric Paul, campus police officer, completed his first year at Northern State University and his 15th year as an officer with the Aberdeen Police Department (APD). Officer Paul is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and a member of the Peer Support Group within the APD. He is a certified instructor for firearms (pistol, rifle, backup/concealed carry), tactical medical, less lethal, flash sound diversionary device, chemical munition, SWAT team command 1, DUI, and rescue task force. At Northern, he provided campuswide ALICE Active Shooter training and provided simulation drills to various departments. Officer Paul attended the Northeast South Dakota Domestic Violence Conference and attends the annual National Night Out community-building campaign that promotes policecommunity partnership opportunities for citizens to interact with local first responders. Within his first year, Officer Paul connected to various student groups on campus through community building in the residence halls and attending various fine arts, educational, and athletic events. Christina B. Shilman, staff counselor, continued to see students for individual counseling and in the classroom where she presented on various topics to promote student wellness. Christina is QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) trained and presented this curriculum to faculty, staff, and students. Christina met the requirements to obtain a license to practice within the state of South Dakota as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in January 2024. Christina, along with the director of Counseling and Health Services Becky Kuch, were involved in several programs on campus to promote wellness and destigmatizing help-seeking behaviors. Christina developed and implemented a program called Brain Break, where she provided space in the student center during finals week for students to take a moment and destress. Kelly A. Weismantel, assistant director of student accessibility services, has worked in higher education for 15 years and has been in her current position for three years. She is one of the Student Affairs representatives on Staff Council, a member of Aberdeen’s Mayor’s Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities and has formed the University Advisory Team on Accessibility to identify and improve accessibility needs on campus. She also works closely with the South Dakota Transitional Services Liaison Project to deliver programming to high school students with disabilities who are exploring college education. In the past year, Kelly has launched ACCESS Northern, a new software system that allows students to register for services and streamline the accommodation request process, and helped get a Pheasants Forever Student Chapter recognized as a student organization. She also attended the South Dakota Higher Education Association Fall Conference and presented at the South Dakota Housing Officer’s meeting. In April 2024, Kelly was recognized with Northern’s Community Leader Service Award at the annual Employee Recognition Lunch. Kelly maintains licensure as a professional counselor in South Dakota and volunteers with several community service organizations with a focus on serving military veterans, environmental conservation, and outdoor recreation in her free time.
