HAZING PREVENTION AND TRANSPARENCY DEFINITION OF HAZING As defined in SDBOR Policy 3.4.1, Section 2.4.8, as any intentional, knowing, or reckless act, committed individually or in concert with others, against a student, regardless of their willingness to participate, that is connected to joining, maintaining, or affiliating with a student organization and results in, or creates a risk of, physical or psychological harm. REPORTING HAZING All members of Northern State University are encouraged to report suspected hazing using the online incident reporting system. Reports may be submitted anonymously. Campus Safety | 605-626-3007 Dean of Students | 605-626-3007 Online Reporting | Incident Reporting Form INSTITUTIONAL REPONSES AND SANCTIONS When a report is received, the university investigates whether the conduct violates hazing policy, endangers students, or requires additional response. All confirmed incidents are included in crime statistics, the biannual Hazing Transparency Report, and reviewed for Timely Warning consideration when appropriate. Hazing cases may result in individual conduct sanctions such as: • Educational Sanctions • Restorative Processes • Suspension or Loss of Privileges • Expulsion Organizations found responsible for hazing may lose access to facilities, funding, or recognition. Students may face both institutional and criminal penalties under South Dakota law. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS To prevent hazing and build respectful communities, Northern incorporates hazing education into: • Wolfpack Welcome • Residence Life training and programming • Student Leadership development sessions • Club and organization registration requirements Content focuses on team building without coercion, bystander strategies, and how to report concerns. HAZING TRANSPARENCY REPORT In compliance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act, Northern started publishing a biannual Hazing Transparency Report beginning December 2025.
