NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2021-22

Chad Bergan Past Chair Megan Biegler Chair Elect Michael Bockorny Chair Dr. Neal Schnoor NSU President Ric Dias NSU Faculty Representative Ashley Erickson Zach Flakus NSU Foundation President/CEO Jim Koehler Mark McNeary Andrew Rehder Jennifer Ring Allie Ryckman Finance/Audit Committee Chair Arthur Russo Kyle Schwan Wolves Club Committee Chair Steve Stickelmyer Treasurer and Investment Committee Chair Rod Tobin Legal Counsel Greg Wieker Secretary As my term as Chairman of the Board concludes and I look back at the past two years, I am astounded at the accomplishments of the Northern State University Foundation (NSUF). The largest capital campaign in Northern’s history came to a successful conclusion, scholarship endowments continue to grow, construction of a new School of Business building will commence this fall and numerous new donors have begun to support Northern. I must acknowledge and give a sincere thank you to the leadership and dedication of the countless donors and friends of the University, the Foundation board members, university leadership, the countless volunteers and the Executive Committee members of the NSUF Board. The successes of the past and the future would not be possible without the time, talents and treasures of so many. None of us knows what the future holds, but we do know that the NSUF will meet the trials ahead. The NSUF has weathered hard times before, and we will again. Wolves are stronger together, and we will do whatever it takes to support the NSUF. On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for championing the NSUF as we confidently meet the future. Go Wolves! Michael Bockorny Chairman of the Board | NSU Foundation NSU FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2

I think we can all agree that the past few years have been a long and windy road; peaks, valleys and a lot of bumps along the way. At the NSUF we continue to find new and positive opportunities around the bend. In the past year the NSU Foundation added new staff and leadership who have brought energy and new ideas to the table. This is well balanced with long-term dedicated staff offering wisdom, experience, loyalty and commitment to the future. Our new University President, Dr. Neal Schnoor, and Foundation President, Zach Flakus, are both proving to be forward-thinking, collaborative leaders. As future Chair, I am excited to see a thriving culture and energy within and outside the walls of the NSU Foundation office. As our new staff become “not-so-new” we now look at the next natural phase of growth with the Foundation: establishing a formal strategic plan. We are currently engaged in the strategic planning process with the input of Northern and NSUF faculty and staff, alumni, community leaders and NSU supporters. We look forward to the process and outcome of creating a blueprint to guide our mission to support the initiatives set forth by NSU and growing scholarship opportunities for students. If you are reading this, you are a supporter of NSU. For that, I want to express my sincere gratitude. Thank you for contributing to the success of this University and its students, the community and the region through your support to the NSU Foundation. Go Wolves! UNIVERSITY AND FOUNDATION PRESIDENTS WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE FUTURE Northern State’s 2021-22 academic year brought with it a new era of optimism for NSU’s future. Over the past 10 years, infrastructure on campus has been upgraded and expanded to make Northern one of the most beautiful and functional university campuses in the Midwest. The recent completion of the Jewett Regional Science Education Center, South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and the Regional Sports Complex means NSU students have unprecedented access to academic, athletic and specialty programs, right on campus. Leading Northern into the future is Dr. Neal Schnoor, NSU president. “Having a beautiful campus and talented faculty, staff and coaches is no longer enough to draw students to Aberdeen,” said Schnoor. “The NSU Foundation has been a great asset to engage alumni, donors and friends to help provide scholarships and market Northern, and we look forward to working together to expand our reach for years to come.” NSU Foundation President/CEO Zach Flakus knows NSU’s history. “Northern has long been a hub for academics, fine arts and athletics, but has become a regional asset for workforce development, entrepreneurship and economic development,” Flakus said. “Dr. Schnoor has great experience in higher education and understands NSU has been built on community relationships.” The Foundation is currently conducting strategic planning sessions in alignment with the University’s strategic priorities, and both have the right to be optimistic. Northern has a beautiful campus, talented faculty, staff and students, and tremendous private support and a history of success. 4

Even after their passing, the couple continues to spread the love of music and education through their gift to NSU, the Berggren Endowment. Both John and Alyce began teaching at Northern State Teachers College in the 1940s. Alyce was hired in 1947 and taught until her retirement in 1991. In her time at Northern, she earned many honors including the titles of First Lady of Aberdeen in 1982, and outstanding faculty in 1987. In 1988, she was recognized by the South Dakota Education Association and received the Friends in the Arts Award by the Aberdeen Arts Council in 1990. She was named Emeritus Professor of Music in 1992, and she continued to accompany music students until 2002. Alyce was an active teacher and performer, presenting master classes and workshops throughout the state, and toured with Professor Allan Jacobson under the sponsorship of the South Dakota Arts Council, presenting duo-piano concerts in many communities, as well as performing with the South Dakota String Quartet during their residencies. John was hired by Northern in 1949 after earning multiple bachelor’s degrees in Arts and Music as well as his Master of Arts, and serving four years as a surgical technician for the United States Army Air Corps. The Doctorate in Music and Music Administration was granted in 1952, also from Columbia University. He continued his education and studied at the Juilliard School and the American Theatre Wing, both in New York City. John married Alyce in 1950 in Chicago, Ill., and retired from NSU in 1985 as Professor Emeritus. He was crucial in progressing the arts in the Aberdeen area, as well as around the country. He served on the South Dakota Arts Council for 11 years, as well as the Aberdeen Community Concert Association and South Dakota Music Teachers Association, both of which he led as President, and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. John was instrumental in establishing chapters of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a national music fraternity, Pi Kappa Lambda, a national music scholastic society, Sigma Alpha Iota, a women’s professional music fraternity, and achieving department membership in the National Association of Schools of Music. He was also a member of the National Association of Choral Conductors and the South Dakota Educational Television Board. As a member of the Central Opera Service, he was a District Judge of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in Chicago, Ill. and Lincoln, Neb. He served as Judge and Choral Clinician for many years for music contests and festivals throughout the area. In 1978, the Alyce and John Berggren Scholarship Foundation was established, and in 1982, the recital hall in the Johnson Fine Arts Center was dedicated to them. Since the endowment scholarship began over 40 years ago, countless students from NSU’s School of Fine Arts have reaped the benefits of their kindness and generosity. From teaching, to leading, to giving, the Clarkes have dedicated much to the NSU community. Graduating from high school in the late 1930, Les and Charlotte attended and graduated from SDSU with degrees in Agricultural Education and Home Economics, respectively. Les was called to active duty in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and spent two years in the South Pacific and Pearl Harbor. Upon his return to the United States, the Clarkes were married on December 27, 1945. Les and Charlotte began their first teaching assignments (Agriculture and Home Economics) in Sisseton, S.D. Les moved into administration, taking over as the high school principal. He completed his master’s degree at SDSU in 1955, and both he and Charlotte enrolled at the University of Wyoming. Continuing to advance their degrees, Les received his doctorate in administration and Charlotte received her master’s degree in education in 1959. In 1959, J. Howard Kramer, the President of Northern, offered Les a position as an Assistant Professor of Education, which he accepted. Les retired in 1984 but continued on as a teacher and a member of the graduate faculty at Northern until 1992. The Clarkes’ dedication to education and their love of students and the learning process has not dwindled with their retirement. Les and Charlotte have generously given many gifts to support the NSU Foundation, including endowments for students in the School of Education, College of Arts and Sciences, and School of Fine Arts. In 1972 they became members of the original President’s Club and have since included the NSU Foundation as a beneficiary in their wills. 9

The Meyers arrived in Aberdeen in August of 1999 when Don accepted the role of head men’s basketball coach for the Wolves. In his 11-year career at Northern, NSU won 221 games. They enjoyed seven consecutive 20 or more win seasons. They led the nation in attendance four times, setting a school record for attendance of 71,024 for 15 games during the 2008-09 season. The Wolves competed in five NCAA men’s basketball national tournaments. On January 10, 2009, NSU’s victory over the University of Mary provided Coach Meyer with his 903rd win and the top spot on the NCAA men’s basketball career victories chart. Coach Meyer retired at the end of the 2009-10 season with a record of 923 wins and 324 losses. In his 38 years as a head basketball coach, only one player who completed his eligibility in the program did not graduate. On May 18, 2014, Coach Meyer lost his battle with cancer at age 69. While he is no longer with us physically, his legacy, and the couples’ spirit of generosity and giving continue on through their endowment. The goal of their gift is to support NSU Men’s Basketball student-athletes who exemplify the values Coach Meyer exhibited throughout his life: being a positive role model for others and maintaining the integrity of the NSU men’s basketball program and Northern State University. 1 1

The goal of the Youngmans’ generous gift was to support well-rounded students who are involved in many areas of NSU’s community. Roger graduated fromNorthern State Teacher’s College in 1963, and the couple were wed that same year. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Math and Physical Sciences, Roger pursued and earned his master’s degree in Math from Central Michigan in 1968. The couple spent many years overseas with the Department of Defense teaching and coaching. Their work took them to the Azores, Japan, and Germany among other countries. While the Youngmans influenced many students overseas over their career, they also educated many students in communities surrounding Aberdeen. Roger was a teacher and administrator for numerous schools in northeast South Dakota including Bowdle, Conde, and Hecla. Along with their WolfPACT endowment, the Youngmans have supported many other areas of NSU’s campus. They’re avid supporters of NSU’s fine arts students, NSU’s student-athletes, and the overall advancement of the education provided to all students at Northern. The pair have influenced learners around the globe, and because of their gifts to the Roger & Karen Youngman WolfPACT Endowment, they will continue to impact students at Northern State for years to come. 13
