From teaching, to leading, to giving, the Clarkes have dedicated much to the NSU community. Graduating from high school in the late 1930, Les and Charlotte attended and graduated from SDSU with degrees in Agricultural Education and Home Economics, respectively. Les was called to active duty in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and spent two years in the South Pacific and Pearl Harbor. Upon his return to the United States, the Clarkes were married on December 27, 1945. Les and Charlotte began their first teaching assignments (Agriculture and Home Economics) in Sisseton, S.D. Les moved into administration, taking over as the high school principal. He completed his master’s degree at SDSU in 1955, and both he and Charlotte enrolled at the University of Wyoming. Continuing to advance their degrees, Les received his doctorate in administration and Charlotte received her master’s degree in education in 1959. In 1959, J. Howard Kramer, the President of Northern, offered Les a position as an Assistant Professor of Education, which he accepted. Les retired in 1984 but continued on as a teacher and a member of the graduate faculty at Northern until 1992. The Clarkes’ dedication to education and their love of students and the learning process has not dwindled with their retirement. Les and Charlotte have generously given many gifts to support the NSU Foundation, including endowments for students in the School of Education, College of Arts and Sciences, and School of Fine Arts. In 1972 they became members of the original President’s Club and have since included the NSU Foundation as a beneficiary in their wills. 9
