Droessler Grabowska, longtime educator and mentor of thousands of teachers throughout the upper Midwest, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2014, in Mankato. She was 93. Born Sept. 28, 1920, in Bancroft, Iowa, Helen received her B.A. from the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minn., and taught at several high schools in Minnesota and Iowa before serving as education advisor to the U.S. Army in Japan 1951-53. She returned to the U.S. and earned an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Helen and husband, Mel Grabowska, moved to Aberdeen where she became an assistant professor of education at Northern State College. Helen was the first female faculty member to give the commencement address at NSU and was named Teacher of the Year in 1979.
