These are the conditions we look for as we begin the chapter creation process. • Reasonable number of alumni in an area to support a chapter and to ensure all goals can be accomplished. • Enthusiastic initial organizers with several years’ worth of successors recruited. • Regular contact with NSU Alumni Association/Foundation staff for sharing accurate and timely information and services. These are the first steps taken in establishing a new NSU alumni chapter: A lifelong resident of Aberdeen, Frank R. “Bob” Nelson continues to support Northern State University even 10 years after his death. Mr. Nelson loved to attend sporting events at Northern and regularly walked from home to campus. Nelson began college at Northern before serving in the U.S. Army under General Patton. Upon his return to Aberdeen, he completed his bachelor’s degree in business from Northern in 1946. Nelson lived just west of the campus on Lincoln Street. He and his father owned and operated the Frank Nelson & Son Plastering and Lathing Company. He retired in 1960, and continued to make Aberdeen his home. Bob will long and warmly be remembered by his family for his kindness and generosity. Mr. Nelson always held Northern in the highest regard. A trust that he established in 1996 has now funded endowments for the WolfPact scholarship program as well as athletics and business. “Bob was a self-made man, loved Northern and enjoyed taking part in many activities on campus,” said Frank Carlson, nephew and trustee for the Nelson estate. “Bob used to routinely walk to the library and read financial magazines and newspapers. It is moving and ironic that Bob learned how to invest and make money in the stock market by reading at Northern….and eventually gave a large portion of his estate to Northern”. “Gifts of this type really require a team effort and thoughtful planning,” said Todd Jordre, President and CEO of the NSU Foundation. “Mr. Nelson worked with his financial advisors and foundation staff years ago, to create a major gift plan that ended up benefiting several charities in the Aberdeen region along with Northern. We are so pleased that a graduate and friend saw fit to make a major investment in Northern students in the areas of business and athletics.” “Gifts of this type really require a team effort and thoughtful planning,” said Todd Jordre, President and CEO of the NSU Foundation.
