NORTHERN TODAY 16 SPRING 2015 NORTHERN ATHLETICS S T UD E N T H I GH L I GH T S NORTHERN finished first in the NSIC with 64 student-athletes named to the NSIC Fall AllAcademic team. Another 52 were named to the spring All-Academic team. Northern student-athletes have 17 straight semesters with an overall GPA above 3.20, topping 3.26 after fall 2014 semester. During the past two seasons, five NSU head coaches received NSIC Coach of the Year honors – Head Football Coach Tom Dosch, Head Women’s Basketball Coach Curt Fredrickson, Head Baseball Coach Dean Berry, Head Volleyball Coach Brent Aldridge and Head Softball Coach Kristi Villar. With this issue we highlight the accomplishments of some of the many gifted athletes who attend NSU and compete as Northern State Wolves. Wolves athletics update Northern State University continues to celebrate historic achievements in athletics. Men’s and women’s basketball for the sixth consecutive year led the NCAA Division II in attendance, and the women’s team won the NSIC Conference Tournament for the first time in school history. Seth Bachand Senior forward Seth Bachand led the Wolves to their first NCAA regional appearance since 2008-09, as NSU finished with a 23-9 record overall. The senior averaged 13.6 points and 7.7 rebounds, while shooting 60.4 percent from the floor, ranking 19th in the nation. Junior wrestler Joe Gomez earned All-American status in the 197-pound weight class for Wolves wrestling in 2015. The sophomore finished the year with a 28-12 record overall, and an eighth place finish at the national tournament. He wrestled to five major decisions, five victories by fall and one technical fall. Among his accomplishments were earning All-NSIC and NWCA All-Academic honors. Junior thrower Breann Jackson represented the women’s track and field team at the NCAA Indoor National Championships, competing in the weight throw. The junior earned All-NSIC honors after taking second in the championship meet. Breann finished sixth overall from nationals, recording her first career All-American nod. Sophomore distance runners Sasha Hovind and Dakotah Bullen have solidified their spots as the fastest 5,000m and 10,000m runners in Northern State history. They opened the season at the prestigious Drake Relays earning spots in the 10,000m run. Hovind took sixth with a time of 35:29.83 and Bullen placed ninth at 35:38.72, as each Wolf broke the 27-year-old record of Marlene Calmus. At the NSIC championship meet, Hovind placed second and Bullen fourth in both the 5,000 and 10,000, with Hovind setting another school record in the 10,000 with a time of 35:02.25, seventh fastest in NCAA Division II. Both runners represented NSU at the national championship in Allendale, Mich. Hovind claimed AllAmerican honors in two events, finishing 8th in the 10,000 and 7th in the 5,000.
