NORTHERN TODAY 8 FALL 2019 NORTHERN offers a multitude of programs abroad every year. One such trip in 2019 was led by Drs. Andria Moon and Anna Schwan from the Millicent Atkins School of Education. Moon and Schwan took 13 students on a 10-day faculty-led study abroad program to Spain in May. On the trip, the students visited Madrid, Seville, Toledo, La Alhambra and Malaga. Schwan spent a year of her own college career in Spain, so she was able to offer some insight into what should be on the trip’s itinerary. “This was a wonderful opportunity for me to put together this trip of all of the places that I loved and to be able to share those places with Andria and all of the students,” she said. The students were exposed to the Spanish architecture, history and landscape. Study Abroad trips through NSU’s School of Education are unique in that the students get to learn how the school system works in the countries that they visit. This year, the NSU students stopped at a school in Seville, where they heard a presentation on how schools in Spain function and were able to interact with the students. Every school system is different, and understanding how education works in other countries helps broaden the horizons of the students as well as makes them view education on a global scale. Dr. Schwan said, “This is an experience that really sets them apart from everyone else. It’s important for us as we put (the students) out into the job market to give them some of these skills and experiences to be the best that they can be.” This was Dr. Schwan’s first study abroad trip with the School of Education. Dr. Moon, however, has led two trips to Italy and Greece with the School of Education in the past. Dr. Moon said, “We are very blessed here with students that are so excited and kind and respectful; it makes it easier for us because it is stressful planning these trips, but seeing these students explore and learn and grow makes these trips well worth the stress.” Because of the overwhelming success of their trip to Spain, Moon and Schwan have already begun combining forces SHARING THE WORLD WITH STUDENTS NSU School of Education professors lead study abroad programs News | NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY Of the many opportunities students have at Northern, one of the most impactful is NSU Study Abroad.
