NORTHERN TODAY 14 FALL 2017 Athletics Recap Updated Nov. 2017 FOOTBALL VOLLEYBALL NORTHERN ATHLETICS Heading into the final week of the 2017 season, the NSU football team holds a 5-5 record overall and 4-2 mark in the NSIC North. THE WOLVES opened the season at home with a 23-16 victory in the third annual Ag Bowl. In the win against the Wildcats, Nathan Shaw connected for three made field goals, including a career long of 48 yards. Shaw added the 27th of his career against Bemidji State (Oct. 21) making him the all-time career leader. NSU opened North Division play against MSU Moorhead over Gypsy Days with a 28-20 victory over the Dragons. The Wolves added their second divisional victory on the road in the MidcoSN Game of the Week at Minot State with a 27-19 victory. After two tough losses to Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State, the Wolves bounced back for wins over St. Cloud State (21-16) and U-Mary (66-21). The win over the Marauders tied their single game school record of points scored set a season ago against Minnesota Crookston. Nicholas Truen matched his single game career high of 204 yards against U-Mary, while leading the team with 809 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns. Graduate student Zachery Barber leads the Northern receivers with 290 total yards and three touchdowns. Hunter Trautman stepped into the starting quarterback role mid-way through the season, recording 1,099 yards passing and seven touchdowns. Noah MacPherson has come into his own defensively, leading the team with 74 tackles, three forced fumbles and two defensive touchdowns. Preston Droessler leads the Wolves defense and sits fourth in the NSIC with 5.5 sacks, averaging .55 per game. The Wolves will finish up the regular season against Minnesota Crookston on the road. The Wolves volleyball team opened the 2017 season ranked No. 24 in the AVCA Top-25 Poll, and climbed to No. 7 overall in the poll’s 10th installment. WITH ONE WEEK remaining in the regular season, the Wolves are 22-4 overall and 15-3 in the league, poised to host the first round of the NSIC Tournament. The Wolves have tallied top-25 victories over No. 19 Colorado School of Mines (3-1), No. 9 Winona State (3-1), (RV) Upper Iowa (3-1), (RV) Sioux Falls (3-0), No. 1 Southwest Minnesota State (3-1), No. 21 Wayne State (3-2) and No. 4 Minnesota Duluth (3-0). The win over the Mustangs marked the third time in school history that the Wolves have taken down the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. Northern sits top-5 in the NSIC in multiple statistical categories, including hitting percentage (.295), opponent hitting percentage (.172), opponent blocks (1.44), opponent service aces (0.76) and opponent digs (14.70). Hailey Busch leads the team with 287 total kills, while Laura Snyder is hitting a team leading .382. Ashley Rozell has 1,068 total assists, sitting seventh nationally averaging 11.87 per set. Setter Ashley Rozell and right side Laura Snyder were named the NSIC Players of the Week on Sept. 25, after two wins over No. 9 Winona State and (RV) Upper Iowa.
