NORTHERN TODAY 13 SPRING 2017 was the top finisher for the Wolves. Kastigar landed ninth overall from the championships in her first cross country race of the season, which earned the junior All-Conference honors. Swimming From the NSIC Championships, the Northern State swim team claimed fourth place overall with 510 team points, despite receiving no points for the diving events. Over the course of the week, the Wolves finished with 96 season best times and 92 lifetime best times in 139 individuals swims. Eleven freshman records were broken, six school records, nine NCAA ‘B’ cuts and one NCAA ‘A’ cut from the championships. The relay teams also picked up four school records. Kastigar was named NSIC Swimmer of the Meet with 80 total points, as well as NSIC Swimmer of the Year. Head coach Elyce Kastigar received NSIC Coach of the Year in her final season with the Wolves. Hannah Kastigar and Edda Skoric clinched spots in the NCAA Championships competing in individual events, while Kastigar, Skoric, Josie Gillund, and Kayla Sproles represented the Wolves in the 800 freestyle relay. Skoric earned All-American honors in the 200-yard backstroke and Hannah Kastigar finished out the year as a four-time All-American with a third place finish in the 200-yard IM, a seventh place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, and a pair of National Championships in the 400-yard IM and the 200-yard butterfly, capturing 13 school records on the year. Wrestling The Northern State wrestling team qualified three Wolves for the NCAA National Championships. The three student-athletes were the most for the program since 2009 as Tyler Stenberg, Sean Havlovic, and Joe Gomez competed for NSU. Stenberg qualified for the championships after winning the 149-pound title at the Super Region Three tournament. He is just the third Wolf in school history to win a regional title. Havlovic qualified for his first championships at 165 pounds, while Gomez prepared for his third trip after earning All-American honors at 197 pounds the previous two seasons. Gomez advanced to day two of the championships earning the third All-American honor of his career with a seventh place finish. The senior was also named the NSIC Elite18 honoree holding the highest league GPA at the championships. He concluded his Northern State career with 107 wins, making him just the 11th wrestler in school history to break the 100 mark. All three Wolves were also named to the All-NSIC teams. Men’s Basketball The Northern State men’s basketball team finished the 2016-17 season with a 22-8 record overall and 17-5 mark in the NSIC, finishing second overall in the league. The season was filled with highlights, including two Wolves joining the 1,000 point club, junior DJ Pollard and senior Mack Arvidson. Pollard was also named the NSIC Elite18 Award recipient, holding the highest GPA from the NSIC/Sanford Health Men’s Basketball Championships. The NSU men welcomed junior transfer Logan Doyle from SDSU, to the Northern sidelines earning NSIC Newcomer of the Year. Doyle was named to the NSIC first team after sitting second in the league in rebounding, averaging 9.2 per game. Mack Arvidson and Ian Smith were named to the All-Conference second team for the league as well. Arvidson was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District ® team for the Wolves. Women’s Basketball The Northern State women’s basketball team closed out the 2016-17 season with an overall record of 25-7, finishing second in the North Division with an NSIC mark of 16-6. Miranda Ristau led the pack, being named to the NSIC All- Conference first team, while Jill Conrad was also named to the All-Conference second team for the Wolves. Ristau was awarded North Division Player of the week five times during the season and completed conference play with an average of 16.6 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. From the NSIC Tournament, Northern State was crowned Conference Champions with a 55-52 victory over the Sioux Falls Cougars. The title marked the second time in three years for the Wolves, who qualified for the Central Region Tournament for the fourth straight season. Jill Conrad was named the tournament’s most valuable player, as she averaged 15.8 points, seven rebounds and shot 51.9 percent from the field in the four games of the tournament. Conrad, Ristau and Paige Waytashek were all named to the NSIC Team after combining for 159 of the Wolves’ 265 points in the tournament. Indoor Track and Field The Northern State track and field team finished the indoor season from the NCAA Championships with three student-athletes competing: Sasha Hovind, Hanneke Oosterwegel and Deshonn Brown. Hovind earned All- American second team honors in the 5000m run. Brown, a sophomore, earned All-American second team honors in the high jump. The Wolves finished ninth as a team from the NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Northern tallied nine school records this indoor season by Oosterwegel in the 60m (7.79), 200m (24.53), 400m (55.53), and 60m hurdles (8.85), the women’s 4x200 relay team of Toni-Ann Ingram, Madison Barnes, Molly Wynn, and Tayla Peterson (1:47.70), Itoitz Rodriguez in the 400m (48.23) and the 600m (1:20.87), Zachary Ulmer in the 800m (1:54.49), and Lucas Osowski in the weight throw (16.76m).
