STUDENT AFFAIRS 21 ANNUAL REPORT Ryan Schwab named Student Affairs Support Staff Partner of the Year Schwab, the Print Shop Coordinator, was selected by Student Affairs staff for his outstanding service to staff and students. Dr. Justin Foote named Student Affairs Faculty Partner of the Year Foote, an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies and the Director of Forensics, was selected by Student Affairs staff for his outstanding service to students and Northern State University. Dr. Foote, or Gus as he is known to all on campus, serves Northern’s community not only through his engagement in the classroom, but his immense involvement beyond. Gus is the faculty advisor for the Student Government Association and Director of the Speech and Debate Team. Dr. Foote also served as a faculty representative on the Student Affairs Council and Student Budget and Appropriations Committee. Gus is an immense supporter of HOWL (New Student Orientation), frequently teaching the “sample class” for incoming students. He is also regularly recognized by the students for his outstanding commitment through awards like the Thunder Awards and Student Organization Advisor of the Year. Megan Frewaldt, Director of Student Involvement and Leadership, said, “Gus deeply understands the importance of students’ experiences beyond the classroom, how their co-curricular involvement sets them up for success. Beyond that, though, Gus genuinely is invested in students’ wellbeing, mental health, and overall achievement as people. He’s a fantastic supporter and mentor for all Northern students.” Dr. Foote’s commitment to students, student engagement, and Northern are unquestionable making him the Student Affairs Faculty Partner of the Year. Schwab joined Northern in 2018 and is completing his fifth year managing the Print Shop. His prior 11 years at Quality Quick Print provided Schwab with a wealth of knowledge in traditional and modern print making. A proud graduate of Roncalli High School, Schwab honed his mechanical skills (a necessity in the print business) during his six or so years working in the power sports industry after high school. “Ryan is a very talented individual. He not only creates highquality, professional print products, but he also takes excellent care of expensive equipment in the Print Shop, troubleshooting problems and making repairs. Ryan is an asset to NSU and is very deserving of this recognition,” said Veronica Paulson, Vice President of Finance and Administration. Schwab provides outstanding service to students, faculty, and staff and is known for going the extra mile. He fixes digital files, identifies problems before projects are completed, and remains calm under pressure. He is particularly good with students and helps student organizations maximize their small budgets. “We are grateful to have Ryan Schwab as a partner and appreciate all that he does for campus,” said Sean Blackburn, Dean of Students. Schwab and his wife, Shannon, live in Aberdeen and enjoy four-wheeling in the Black Hills and traveling.
