STUDENT AFFAIRS 22 ANNUAL REPORT Krista G. Bau, Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities and Title IX Coordinator, was able to make an impact surrounding the topic of sexual misconduct education by presenting on the key findings of the Administrator-Research Campus Climate Collaborative (ARC3) data that was administered in spring 2022. From the data, she partnered with Safe Harbor, a local domestic violence shelter, to provide a confidential advocate on campus to students twice a month, which was featured on Dakota News Now. In the spring semester, a new partnership with the S.D. Network Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault was formed to bring additional prevention education to campus. Additional training efforts Bau provided featured Northern CARES during faculty In-service, open faculty and staff sessions, and hosting a session with the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). Bau also provided Title IX training to campus and numerous student groups such as Resident Assistants, Orientation Leaders, Upward Bound, and within the School of Education. Bau was able to attend professional development opportunities including the NESD Family Violence Conference and the Sexual Assault Prevention Planning Committee through the Network. In her free time, Bau serves as an Executive Board Member of Independent Living Choices, an Executive Board Member of Safe Harbor, secretary of the Family Support Council and serves as a member of the Community Coordinated Response Team (CCRT) through the Department of Social Services Victims’ Services Stop Violence Against Women Grant Program. Bau continues to chair Northern CARES and serves on the Mental Wellness Week Committee, HOWL, and the Advisory Group on Inclusion and Belonging. Brittany Bell, Associate Director of Residence Education, was recognized as the Student Organization Advisor of the Year (2022-23) at the Wolfy’s Student Engagement Awards. Bell is currently working on an Ed.D. in Interprofessional Leadership from Kent State University. This fall she served as the cochair for the Northern Mental Wellness Week Committee. Bell is an active participant in the Advisory Group on Inclusion and Belonging, the Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) Northern Experience working group and is a mentor for Black Student Union at Aberdeen Central High School. During Bell’s first year at Northern, she accomplished three key results from the Student Affairs Strategic Plan (20212025): the revitalization of the Residence Hall Association, the creation of a Residential Curriculum Model (phase one implementation), and the restructuring of staffing inside the Residence Halls. Bell also completed the Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education training course. Bell attended the South Dakota Higher Education Association (SDHEA) Fall Conference in Sioux Falls, S.D., and the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I) Academic Initiatives Conference in New Orleans, La. Sean S. Blackburn, Dean of Students, led Student Affairs in the completion of 26 Key Results in the third year of the Student Affairs Strategic Plan. Blackburn attended the South Dakota Higher Education Association (SDHEA) Fall Conference in Sioux Falls, S.D., and presented “Taking Strategic Planning Off the Dusty Bookshelf” with colleague Megan Frewadlt. Blackburn continued to serve on the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), Enrollment Management Council (EMC), Student Budget and Appropriations Committee (SBAC), the South Dakota Board of Regents (SDBOR) Student Affairs Council, and the Campus Culture and Climate Committee. Blackburn cochairs the Opportunity for All Council and Data Governance Oversite Committee, facilitated and is a founding member of the Advisory Group on Inclusion and Belonging, and chairs Northern’s Student Affairs Council. In spring 2023, Blackburn was appointed to the Salvation Army Advisory Board. Ashley M. Bruzek, Acting Assistant Director for Student Involvement and Leadership, graduated this past spring 2023 with her Master’s in Banking and Financial Services from Northern State University. She served on the Student Involvement Committee and contributed to two search committees, one Professional highlights: Student Affairs team members are challenged to be life-long learners, to engage with national and regional professional associations, and to utilize institutional opportunities (committee assignments, campus, and community projects) to develop their skills and abilities, grow as individuals, and better serve students. Committed to excellence and personal growth, these staff members live out this challenge.
