Today, Daschle is a senior policy advisor to the law firm DLA Piper where he provides strategic advice on public policy issues such as climate change, energy, health care, trade, financial services and telecommunications. Dr. Tom Hawley, Northern State University Provost/ Vice President of Academic Affairs, announced the recipient of this year’s Outstanding Faculty Member Award is Dr. Erin Fouberg, associate professor of geography and serves as academic advisor for the NSU Honors Program. Dr. Fouberg was selected for this honor based on her service to the community, as well as teaching and research excellence at NSU. She earned a B.S. from the Georgetown School of Foreign Service in Washington, D.C., and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. The Next Chapter News northern NSU Students Win Big in Sioux Falls Northern State University held its 109th Commencement ceremony on Sat, May 7, in the Joseph H. Barnett Physical Education and Convention Center with 275 degree candidates eligible for graduation. Former Senate Majority Leader TomDaschle delivered the commencement address, and was also presented with an honorary doctorate by President James M. Smith during the ceremony. Daschle, an Aberdeen native, was first elected to the first of four terms in the United States House of Representatives in 1978 and joined the United States Senate in 1986 where he served as minority leader and later as majority leader. 6 northern today Northern State University Banking and Financial services students hosted South Dakota’s senior Senator Tim Johnson recently in Aberdeen. Senator Johnson, who also serves as the Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee was on campus to visit with students about the banking industry and to announce the creation of an internship program for NSU students in the banking field along with him on the Senate Banking Committee. “This is a tremendous opportunity for our students,” said Banking and Financial Services Professor Stan Vinson. “The experience of working next to this very influential committee in our capitol will open many doors to them after graduation.” Whitney Morsching, Aberdeen, and Chelsey Siebrands, Willow Lake, have been selected as the first interns with Senator Johnson on the Senate Banking Committee. Morsching is a 2011 graduate of NSU with a dual major in Finance/Economics. Following her internship, she plans to attend graduate school majoring in Applied Economics at University of North Dakota. Siebrands is also a 2011 graduate of NSU with a dual major in Banking and Financial Services and Professional Accountancy. Northern State University students Lee Ertman, Jason Schumacher, Sarah Ekrem and Shawn Mason took top honors in the student category at the Governor’s Giant Vision Awards, presented at the Governor’s Economic Development Conference. The students won for their potential new start up business “Great Plains Aquaponics”. The business focuses on growing plants hydroponically using algae or fish.
