Letter from the president northern today 3 I was honored to be part of a delegation from Northern State that spent two weeks in March visiting our partner universities throughout China and Korea. The purposes for this visit were to discuss the enrollment of additional English as a Second Language (ESL) students, to enact new two-plus-two programs, to begin comprehensive faculty exchanges, to enhance study abroad opportunities, to increase dual degree participation, to establish alumni chapters in Asia, and to expand use of our existing exchange agreements. On all of these fronts, I believe that our talks were highly productive. During the twelve days in Asia we visited eleven universities. We held alumni events in Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, and Busan. The large turnout at each of these events, by former students and partner university representatives, was indeed heartwarming. We have begun to establish alumni coordinators for each of the aforementioned cities – the obvious goal here is to keep our institution close to the forefront of thought on behalf of all students who have studied at Northern State University. Given the 10% reduction in state support to higher education by the South Dakota Legislature, the establishment of these multinational agreements is now truly essential. Likewise, NSU is perfectly positioned to bring these complex agreements to life. I was delighted to see how powerfully the NSU delegation worked to make this outcome a reality. Certainly the test of time will be our best barometer as to the real successes of these efforts. However, I am extremely pleased to report that all indicators, to date, appear to be highly positive. Finally, let me share with you that the beginning of the fall semester is literally just a few weeks away and all indications look very positive regarding our anticipated enrollment numbers. Several major construction projects on the Barnett Center and Student Center additions have begun, as well, and final preparations are being made to many projects that will be wrapping up before the first day of class. I hope you’ll have a chance to visit campus soon and see our growth and expansion with your own eyes. I truly believe you’ll be impressed with all that we are doing in some of the most difficult economic times I have encountered in my nearly twenty-five years working in higher education. Northern is moving to the best of the world and, it quite frankly, shows. “I truly believe you’ll be impressed with all that we are doing…” “During the twelve days in Asia we visited eleven universities. After 32 years of behind the scenes work Larry Wild, assistant professor of theater, will retire from the university leaving behind a legacy of expertise in production design including sets and lights, and technical direction. When he came to NSU in 1979 Wild was a veteran in the theater world with teaching stints at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio, W i l m i n g t o n College in W i l m i n g t o n , Ohio and Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Penn. During his substantial time at the NSU Wild has be a part of thousands of plays, concerts, community events, countless classes and has mentored many people, both students and staff. He will be remembered most for his dedication to the NSU Theater department. “Literally, EVERY event that takes place in the Johnson Fine Arts Center (JFAC) including concerts, recitals, plays, guest speakers, commencements, dance recitals, community events and guest performances has Larry’s touch. He has humbly pursued excellence in his position and is the “behind the scenes” key to success in all of these events,” shared Dr. Alan LaFave, Dean of the School of Fine Arts. “Larry’s breadth and depth of knowledge of every little nook and cranny of JFAC surpasses anyone. He has meant more to fine arts, NSU, and the Aberdeen community/ region than I am able to adequately describe.” Larry is appreciated equally for his e x t r a o r d i n a r y service to the School of Fine Arts and the Aberdeen community. His larger than life presence will be sorely missed by students, staff and faculty alike. “Larry is one of the most dedicated and devoted employees and supporters of NSU that I have ever known. We will miss him greatly and wish him much success and happiness in his retirement,” added LaFave. “I hope we will still see him and Margaret at our events and look forward to perhaps seeing his contributions continue with the Northern Fort Summer Playhouse in the summer and as an online professor of theater appreciation.” northern today 7 “He has humbly pursued excellence in his position and is the ‘behind the scenes’ key to success…” Behind the scenes… News northern “Literally, EVERY event that takes place in the Johnson Fine Arts Center including concerts, recitals, plays, guest speakers, commencements, dance recitals, community events and guest performances has Larry’s touch…” Dr. Alan LaFave, Dean of the School of Fine Arts As the curtain closed at the end of the 2010-11 theater season, and another successful year of plays, concerts, and community events is in the history books, the Northern State community prepares to say goodbye to one of their own. “Larry is one of the most dedicated and devoted employees and supporters of NSU that I have ever known.” Dr. Alan LaFave
