The NSIC Britton/Kelly nominees are Mike Zerr, Aberdeen, S.D. and Tanya Vassar, Cheyenne, Wyo. The Britton Award was created in 1985 in honor of Dr. William Britton, a longtime faculty representative at Bemidji State University. The Kelly Award is named in honor of Willis R. Kelly, an associate professor of physical education at the University of Minnesota, Morris. A member of the NSIC Hall of Fame, Kelly also coordinated the Minnesota-Morris Physical Education Department from 1970-87. She became the first director of women’s intercollegiate athletics at Minnesota-Morris in 1976 and was later promoted to athletic director for the whole department. Kelly passed away in 1988. Sophomore Matt Meuleners turned back the No. 3 and No. 1 ranked wrestlers in the nation to his first career NCAA Division II national title, winning the heavyweight division at the 2011 NCAA championships. Meuleners, who also earnedhis second career All-America status, became the Wolves’ first ever NCAA Division II national champion. In indoor track and field, Senior Calvin McGruder and sophomore Luke Hauert competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships, ending their indoor seasons with competitions in the long jump and 60 meter hurdles. Hauert ended the season with an eleventh place finish in the prelims of the 60 meter hurdles. He missed the final round by .18 of a second and by three places. During the 2011 season, Luke added a third Northern Sun Intercollegiate (NSIC) All-Conference selection to his performance repertoire by setting a new meet record running a time of 8.10 in the prelims. McGruder finished his season with a tenth place finish at the indoor national meet in the long jump leaping 23’1.25”. He is a two time indoor and outdoor All-American in the long jump. This season, Calvin received All-Central Region and All-Conference accolades in the long and triple jump. At the NSIC Indoor Championship meet he finished second in the long and won the high jump competition. The NSU Women’s Basketball team advanced to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health tournament semifinals. In this match up the Wolves faced the Concordia UniversitySt. Paul Golden Bears. The Bears edged Northern State University 74-67 to advance to the championship game and ended NSU’s hopes for their first conference tournament championship since moving to Division II.
The Wolves, who were playing in their eighth tournament semifinals since 2000, fell to 1-7 in second round games and now sit at 20-8 on the season. NSU was the second seed in the tournament by virtue of their two regular-season wins over the Golden Bears, who were able to exact their revenge to move to 19-9 overall. 8 northern today Sports northern Sports Wrap The Northern State University athletic teams celebrated a national championship and prominent national and conference tournament appearances at the conclusion of the winter sports season. The honor, named for the late NCAA President Dr. Myles Brand, is bestowed to senior NSIC student-athletes who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher, are exhausting their eligibility and are on track to graduate. Each studentathlete will be recognized by the NSIC with a certificate of achievement and a wrist watch.
