NORTHERN TODAY 17 WINTER 2024 NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY | News week of homecoming festivities wrapped up in a blowout victory against Minot State Beavers. The football game’s final score was 46-9. Wolves went into the 2023 Gypsy Days weekend on a winning streak after the swimming team defeated the Jamestown Jimmies 139-58 on Friday. Events were held throughout the week of Oct. 2, culminating with the Gypsy Day Parade and football game on Oct. 7. “Wolves Go to Vegas” was the theme of the 107th annual homecoming celebration. Festivities included many events that were open to the community, including the Steps for Shep 5k, softball Homerun Derby, Sideliner’s luncheon, tailgating and, of course, the parade. Crowning Queen and King New royalty was crowned Thursday, followed by a bonfire. This year, students voted to change the title of Marshal to King. Kayla Jensen and Clayton Randall emerged victorious as the new Queen and King. The 2023 Queen candidates were Jensen, Jordan Hermansen, Gabbi Dimatteo, Aunna Cloos and Maddie Gonzales. The King candidates were Randall, Jeremy Sommer, Cody Brouwer, Dylan Grundstrom and Augustin (Gus) Reede. Jensen, a senior majoring in special education, is originally from Claremont, SD. On campus, she is involved as Northern’s student government association Vice President, a head Honors mentor, and a senior orientation leader. She also plays in the symphonic band. Outside of her campus life, she volunteers with Special Olympics as a Unified Partner in bocce and cheerleading. Jensen was sponsored by SGA and Honors. Randall is a business management major, originally from Herreid, SD. On campus, he is involved by being on the football team, and part of the Newman Center and the Awaken Bible Study. Outside of school and football, he likes to go hunting, golfing, fishing, hot yoga, and spending time with his family. Clayton was sponsored by the Newman Club. Parade Float Results The community’s creativity was on full display in the array of clever floats and enthusiastic walkers. There were 118 floats and 14 bands this year. With a crew of dancers dressed as cards, showgirls and Elvis, Aberdeen Family YMCA jammed their way down Main Street and into first place in the Gypsy Day Parade float competition.
